life is too short.

Oh, Puerto Rico, a florid garden of magical brilliance.

I’ll admit that I say, “life is too short,” a lot. Leading up to this trip, I have had a lot of life events happen. I’m so thankful for the community I have worked hard to build, which is currently standing near me in the spaces I need it to. With my life being so busy, I needed to make some time to reclaim my mind. On the surface, I was keeping things together, but when my feet touched the ground of the island, my breathing became natural.

On the island, things moved at their own pace. I understood that I no longer needed control and that spontaneity was now chasing my heart. This trip was more of a quick retreat, logistically speaking, since I had a late arrival and an early departure. After a good night’s rest, I needed a familiar treat (guava & cheese) to start this weekend off right.

Catedral - San Juan, Puerto Rico

Being near and in the water felt restorative. The overcast sky served as the backdrop for this procession. All of the chaos, heavy emotions, and unprocessed feelings were fading. Then I felt the rain begin to comfort me. Will and his partner connected and grounded me with this experience.

He shared context about the island and its history, which brought a new perspective. At some point, we anchored and just enjoyed the night sky reflected in the water. Peace was found. On the last day, we spent time in Old San Juan, where I saw the land side of all the buildings I had seen from the boat side. Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) was beautiful inside and out. I got some video footage outside the historical area while I was on the boat tour. If you get a chance, be sure to take the tour.

I want to close by saying that this will not be the last time that I see the sands of this majestic place. The memories that I have made here will remind me of Borinquén.
